Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): A Complete Checklist

Win featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice answers with an AEO checklist covering structure, schema and question research.

AEO in one sentence

Answer Engine Optimization is formatting your expertise so a machine can lift a correct, self-contained answer out of your page without needing the rest of it.

Start with the questions, not the keywords

Collect the real phrasing: People Also Ask boxes, autocomplete, your own site search logs, sales call transcripts and support tickets. Group them by intent — definition, comparison, procedure, troubleshooting, pricing. Each group maps to a different page shape.

The answer-first pattern

Every page that targets a question should open with a 40 to 60 word answer that stands alone. Then expand with context, caveats, examples and evidence. This single change is the highest-yield AEO edit most sites can make.

  • Put the question in an H2 that matches how people ask it.
  • Answer in one short paragraph immediately below.
  • Follow with detail for the human reader.

Structure that extracts cleanly

  1. Numbered steps for procedures — never prose for a process.
  2. Tables for specification and pricing comparisons.
  3. Definition lists for terminology.
  4. One idea per paragraph, with the claim in the first sentence.

Schema that helps

FAQPage for genuine question and answer blocks, HowTo for procedures, Product and Offer for commerce, Article with a real author, and Organization plus WebSite on every page. Only mark up content that is visible, and validate with the Rich Results Test. Markup does not create eligibility on its own — it clarifies what is already there.

Voice and conversational phrasing

Spoken queries are longer and more natural. Include variants such as "how do I", "is it worth", "what happens if" and "how much does it cost to". Keep sentences short — voice assistants read your text out loud.

Local answers

For location-based businesses, consistency is the ranking factor. Name, address, phone, hours and service area must match exactly across your site, Google Business Profile and major directories, and your LocalBusiness schema should mirror them.

An AEO audit in ten checks

  • Does every key page answer its query in the first 60 words?
  • Is there one H1 and a heading outline that reads like a table of contents?
  • Are procedures numbered and comparisons tabulated?
  • Is FAQ content real, useful and marked up?
  • Do author bios show relevant credentials?
  • Are publish and update dates visible?
  • Are claims sourced and linked?
  • Is the primary content in the server-rendered HTML?
  • Are the main answers reachable within two clicks of the homepage?
  • Is the page fast on mobile?
