Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): The 2026 Playbook
How to get cited by ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot — a practical GEO framework with a repeatable checklist.
What GEO actually is
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your site the source an AI assistant reuses when it answers a question. Classic SEO optimises for a ranked list of links. GEO optimises for being quoted inside a synthesised answer, usually with one or two citations that carry almost all of the click-through.
That difference changes the unit of optimisation. Search engines rank pages. Generative engines retrieve passages. If your best insight is buried in paragraph nine of a 3,000-word essay, a model may never surface it.
The four things AI engines need from you
- Access. Your robots.txt must allow the crawlers you want visibility in — GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Google-Extended for Gemini grounding. Blocking them is an opt-out from AI search.
- Plain HTML. Retrieval pipelines rarely execute JavaScript. Server-render your copy, headings and links.
- Quotable chunks. Sections of roughly 100 to 200 words, each with a descriptive heading, a clear claim and evidence behind it.
- Corroboration. Models weight consensus. Being described the same way on your own site, on review platforms, in Reddit threads and in industry roundups makes you a safer citation.
A GEO workflow you can repeat monthly
- Build a prompt set of 20 to 40 buying-intent questions your customers actually ask.
- Run them in ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Record which brands and URLs get cited.
- Classify every gap: no access, no page, weak page, or no third-party corroboration.
- Fix the cheapest gaps first. Access and structure issues are usually a single afternoon.
- Re-run the same prompt set next month against the same wording so the comparison is fair.
Content formats that get cited disproportionately
Original data beats opinion. Benchmarks, surveys, pricing teardowns, and "we tested 14 tools" posts get reused because they contain facts a model cannot generate. Comparison and alternatives pages get cited for recommendation queries. Definition and glossary pages win the "what is" family of prompts.
Measuring GEO without a rank tracker
There is no position one in an AI answer, so measure three things instead: citation share across your prompt set, referral sessions from assistant domains, and assisted conversions from those sessions. Track referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com as their own analytics segment from day one.
Where GEO and SEO overlap
Almost everywhere in the fundamentals. Fast, crawlable, well-structured pages with real expertise win both. GEO adds a passage-level discipline and a heavier emphasis on off-site consensus. If you are choosing what to do first, fix technical access, then structure, then invest in original evidence.
